Re-Elected to Richardson City Council

Dallas, TX –
Council Member Amir Omar claimed victory in last
Saturday’s election to serve a second term on the City Council of
Richardson, Texas.   First elected to the City Council Place
7 in 2009, Omar is the only American of Iranian descent to serve in
public office in the Dallas/Forth Worth area.

Located just ten miles outside downtown Dallas, the City of Richardson
is part of the telecom corridor of Texas. The City was ranked as the
18th best place to live in the United States in the August 2008 issue
of Money magazine.

ACLU Sues
School District over Iranian American Students’ Right to Free Speech

May 18, 2011, San Diego, CA – The
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit Monday against
the San Diego school district in a dispute over the removal of messages
painted by  Iranian American students on benches showing support
for freedom in Iran.

The
ACLU claims that La Jolla High School illegally blotted out political
messages painted by the school’s Persian Club on “senior benches” that
have long served as an open forum on campus.  Specifically, the
ACLU asserts that the San Diego District is in violation of State
Education Code 48907.

Bipartisan
Effort Seeks to Preserve Lifeline for Iranian Refugees

May 18, 2011, Washington, D.C. –
On Friday, May 13th, Representatives Howard L.
Berman (D-CA), Trent Franks (R-AZ), Henry A. Waxman (D-CA), and Robert
J. Dold (R-IL) led a bi-partisan letter signed by 64 Members of
Congress urging the House Judiciary Committee to reauthorize a
provision that fast-tracks asylum for religious refugees from
Iran. 

“The situation for Iranian minorities is dangerous.  We cannot
slam their door to freedom.  I call on Chairman Lamar Smith to act
quickly and responsibly,” said Representative Waxman, who represents
one of the largest concentrations of Iranian Americans in the United
States.
