July 2, 2012, Seattle, Washington – With the August 7th primary fast approaching, Cyrus Habib’s campaign for the 48th Legislative District in the Washington State House of Representatives continues to gain momentum with recent endorsements from U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA). If successful, Habib would make history by becoming the first Iranian American elected to a State Legislature.
Habib is the official Democratic Party nominee for the 48th Legislative District, which is being vacated by retiring Representative Deb Eddy. His campaign is being supported by a bipartisan list of local, regional, state and federal leaders, including the Mayors of Bellevue, Redmond, and Kirkland, representing the major communities in the district.
“I am so honored to have the support and confidence of our U.S. Senators,” said Habib in a press release. “Sen. Murray is a leader in transportation and family wage jobs, while Sen. Cantwell is a true advocate for our technology sector and the rights of women. These issues are central to my campaign and their support is a great reflection of my leadership in these areas.”
A technology lawyer and community volunteer, Habib grew up in Bellevue, Washington and is a proud product of its public schools. Having lost his eyesight at age 8 to a rare form of childhood cancer, he learned early the importance of equal opportunity, hard work, and a quality education.
Reflecting his commitment to high standards and accountability in the public school system, Habib’s campaign has also been endorsed by the League of Education Voters, the American Federation of Teachers (Washington) and Stand for Children. “The Bellevue public school system helped me overcome some serious barriers and helped me succeed,” Habib, who went on to become a Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law School graduate, explains. “I am committed to great, innovative schools for every Eastside child and will dedicate myself to finding real funding and accountability solutions.”
