About: The Aftab Committee is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving and advancing the interests of the Iranian-American community. The Aftab Committee aims to connect experts in the medical and social services; arts, business, government and legal fields with Iranian-Americans. We aim to be a resource for any and all seeking information or dialogue about Iranian-Americans. We will serve the community as a hub for gathering data and information on a variety of aspects of day-to-day life here in the United States. One of our functions is making information accessible to non-native English speakers, and presenting that information in a culturally sensitive and relevant manner.

Duration: Flexible

Hours: 40 hours per week

Location: Washington D.C.

Interns will be assisting and leading the following tasks:

  • Writing articles for Aftab
  • Database management
  • Community Outreach
  • Program implementation
  • Event planning
  • Logistical support
  • Administrative duties
  • Research

Desired Skills:

  • Fluency in Persian is a plus but not required
  • Social media marketing
  • Experience with philanthropy

NooshTube, international culinary website and application

About: Nooshtube.com™ is an innovative and international culinary platform that reaches an untapped consumer and advertising market. Nooshtube™ hosts an interactive portal where connoisseurs of Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean foods can share and find recipes, post restaurant recommendations, source vendors, and learn the history and cultural context of the cuisine. Nooshtube™ is also a virtual network that allows users to communicate and connect. The Nooshtube™ mission is to provide a positive platform for cultural exchange through sharing of recipes, heritage, traditions, and related stories.

Duration: Flexible start and end date. Possibility to continue working past the summer

Hours: 7-10 per week

Location: Washington D.C. are preferred but remotely is also acceptable based on the applicant’s flexibility and creativity

Interns will be assisting and leading the following tasks:

  • Creating content and updating pages (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, WordPress, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.)
  • Finding users to follow/friend/like NooshTube
  • Writing and posting blog posts/tweets/updates, etc.
  • Tracking the growth and the impact of social media on NooshTube
  • Replying to comments, messages, etc.
  • Update and collaborate findings to the team

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of digital media software – Photoshop or other graphic design software is preferred
  • Knowledge of video editing software – iMovie, Final Cut, or Windows Live Movie Maker is a plus
  • Knowledge of social media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, blogs, etc.
  • Willingness to create video blogs, write press releases, and Facebook posts
  • Ability to develop a detailed and cool marketing plan
  • Ability to identify a target market and “speak” to that consumer through social media
  • Ability create and upload Twitter & YouTube backgrounds, and minor video editing skills are a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, strong editing skills
  • Experience proofreading and editing
  • Ability to contribute individually, and participate in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to deal with uncertainty and saying that you don’t know something while willing to find out the answer collectively or on your own initiative

Mission: Restore Fellowship

Description: Mission: Restore is a US based non-profit providing surgical care to patients in developing countries. Mission: Restore trains local surgeons in reconstructive surgery to address the critical global health burden caused by traumatic injuries. By training local surgeons to meet the needs of their own communities, we create a sustainable infrastructure where long-term impact is made.

Mission: Restore Fellows are critical to accomplishing our mission and are valued members of our team. Mission: Restore Fellows have a unique opportunity to observe global health challenges firsthand by working directly with Mission: Restore field partners. The Mission: Restore Fellowship is designed to increase Mission: Restore’s impact and offer participants a unique insider experience in the global health/non-profit world. The position is volunteer-based and fellows work independently for a minimum of 3 months reporting directly to the Executive Director.

Fellows are the eyes and ears for Mission: Restore on the ground, and are instrumental to Mission: Restore’s operations.   Fellows help to further Mission: Restore’s work by strengthening partnerships, improving processes, scaling new initiatives, while connecting Mission: Restore’s staff to partners in the field. Fellows also share their insights and stories from the field through photos, articles and social media. Fellows fulfill a core set of deliverables laid out in a personalized work plan that is developed by Mission: Restore with input from key stakeholders. We aim to leverage the unique skill set of each Fellow to accomplish key tasks crucial to maximizing impact and furthering the work of Mission: Restore.

Core Responsibilities

The scope of work will vary based on the Fellow’s skill set, geographic placement and current priorities of Mission: Restore.  However core responsibilities may include the following:

Needs Assessment

  • Observe, learn and document the field partner’s operations
  • Make recommendations on how Mission: Restore can best work within existing systems or improve systems where possible

Monitoring/Evaluation

  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data to help improve surgical outcomes
  • Interview partners to assess impact of surgical training
  • Provide feedback through field reports

Marketing/Communications

  • Create content to help tell the story of Mission:Restore’s impact in the field
  • Contribute content through writing articles, blogs and social media
  • Capture images and video footage to be used for marketing

Research

  • Identify new partner hospitals and surgeons
  • Conduct field-based research and analyze findings
  • Document best practices and learnings

Logistics

  • Coordinate logistics for surgical missions
  • Oversee logistical and technical aspects of skype calls with local partners and US staff
  • Assist the Executive Director with administrative tasks related to field site

Required Skills/Experience

  • High degree of flexibility and problem solving abilities
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Ability to adapt to new cultures and be flexible in new, challenging environments

Core Responsibilities The scope of work will vary, however key projects may include:

  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data from field partners
  • Interview partners to assess impact of surgical training
  • Identify social media trends and manage accounts
  • Contribute content through writing articles, blogs and newsletters
  • Contribute to the production and design of materials
  • Outreach/relationship management with key partners, board members and volunteers
  • Grant/fundraising research, including creation and management of crowd funding campaigns
  • Market research to identify new partners and best practices
  • Coordinate logistics for surgical training missions and video conference calls with local partners
  • Develop/upkeep volunteer and donor database
  • Assist with event planning for fundraisers
  • Assist with administrative tasks as needed
