U.S. State Department Issues New Travel Warning for Iran

December 14, 2012, Washington, D.C. – The U.S. State Department issued a new travel warning on December 7, 2012 for U.S. citizens considering travel to Iran. It supersedes a warning that was issued April 27, 2012 to add additional contact information for the U.S. interests section in Tehran.

The State Department’s Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management (ACS) administers the Consular Information Program, which informs the public of conditions abroad that may affect their safety and security. Country specific information, travel alerts, and warnings are parts of this program. State Department travel warnings have been implemented on Iran since the hostage crisis of 1979.

The updated travel warning calls on U.S. Citizens to “carefully consider” the risks associated with traveling to Iran. It reiterates that Iranian Americans may encounter difficulty leaving the country and that the Iranian government does not acknowledge dual citizenship and will not allow the Swiss government to provide protective services for U.S. citizens who are also Iranian nationals. Due to a lack of diplomatic or consular relations with Iran, the Swiss government serves as a protecting power for U.S. interests in Iran.
