PAAIA Releases 2012 Iran Sanctions Report August 27, 2012, Washington D.C. – Today, PAAIA released its 2012 Iran Sanctions Report, detailing past and current sanctions on Iran, the impact of those sanctions on Iran, and how they affect the Iranian American community in the U.S. Sanctions have been a major component of U.S. policy towards Iran since 1979, when they were first imposed in response to the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Iran. President Carter, in November of that year, issued Executive Order 12170 freezing approximately $12 billion in Iranian assets, including bank deposits, gold, and other properties. With the escalating tensions over Iran’s capabilities to potentially produce a nuclear weapon, additional unilateral and multilateral sanctions have recently been levied against Iran. PAAIA Houston Chapter Hosts Event with Candidate Cyrus Habib August 27, 2012, Houston, TX – The Houston Chapter of the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) in conjunction with Rice University Iranian Students Society (RIS) invite you to attend a lecture with Cyrus Habib, candidate for Washington State House of Representatives. The event will be held at Rice University on Sunday, September 23, 2012. Habib is the official Democratic Party nominee for the 48th Legislative District. His campaign is being supported by a bipartisan list of local, regional, state, and federal leaders, including U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell as well as the Mayors of Bellevue, Redmond, and Kirkland, representing the major communities in the district. Over the past couple of weeks a number of Iranian Americans have come to the attention of the public for their accomplishments in various fields. Boarders without Borders Begins Kickstarter Campaign August 29, 2012, Washington D.C. – “Boarders Without Borders” is a documentary that follows four American pro snowboarders as they travel to Iran to meet Iranian youth, discover Iranian culture, and ride the majestic Alborz mountains. Produced by Alexi H. Khajavi and Marjan Tehrani, the Producer and Director of Arousi Persian Wedding, among others, the documentary takes the audience on a unique journey through the eyes of the American snowboarders. This film is about real people exchanging life experiences, bonded by their love for a unique counter-culture sport. The Producers are raising money to secure an OFAC license, travel to Iran with the professional snowboarders and produce the film as well as pay for the necessary permits, visas, equipment and crew. The project will be managed through a 501c3, which is being acquired. The film has already received significant positive press including from PBS and TransWorldBusiness. The filmmakers have the support and commitment from three professional snowboarders and their company sponsors which represent some of the biggest companies in the sport.
