D.C. – PAAIA and the Iranian American community at large are
seriously concerned about the fate of Dorothy Parvaz, an Iranian
American journalist for Al Jazeera’s English-language channel, who
according to recent media reports was detained in Syria on Friday,
April 29, 2011.
Parvaz was born in Iran to an Iranian father and an American mother.
She received her master’s degree in journalism from the University of
Arizona, and was a 2009 Neiman Fellow
at Harvard University. Prior to
joining Al Jazeera, she spent nearly a decade as a reporter for the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

Member Amir Omar is seeking a second term to serve on the City Council
of Richardson, Texas. In this year’s only three-way city council race,
Omar is being challenged by nutrition product sales company executive,
Alan North and psychotherapist, Diana Clawson.
Omar was elected to the City Council of Richardson representing Place 7
in 2009 and is the first American of Iranian descent to serve in public
office in the Dallas/Forth Worth area. Omar’s successes in Richardson
are bound to have an impact on future generations of Iranian Americans
seeking public office in Texas and throughout the United
States.

Washington, D.C. – The Department of Homeland Security announced
the end of the controversial National Security Entry-Exit
Registration System (NSEERS) program on Thursday, April the 28th.
The Department of Homeland Security explained, in a Federal Register
Notice, that the program was abolished because new automated technology
renders the NSEERS unnecessary and no longer cost-effective.

Mentorship
Program. PAAIA’s mentorship program provides the
opportunity for
Iranian Americans to receive one-on-one guidance from highly
accomplished professionals within the Iranian American community.
