Washington Post staff writer Tara Bahrampour has been named the senior recipient of the German Marshall Fund of the United States’ 2009 Peter R. Weitz prize for excellence and originality in U.S. reporting on Europe and the transatlantic relationship.

Bahrampour, a member of the Post’s Metro staff, was honored for her reporting in 2008 on the war in the former Soviet republic of Georgia and its aftermath. As the senior recipient of the prize, she receives a $10,000 award.

The judges praised her exposure of the human side of the war, in coverage that included an “outstanding” account of the search for a man in Abkhazia who was still missing from an earlier conflict in the region.

Bahrampour was lauded for “textured, detailed, original on-the-ground reporting,” and for personalized narratives that “were poignant without being emotionalized” and captured the “feel of a story without missing the news.”

Her work “revealed the subtleties and contradictions behind one of Europe’s biggest stories of the year,” the judges said.

Bahrampour is author of “To See and See Again: A Life in Iran and America,” published in 1999.
