PAAIA, San Diego Chapter and ISTA at UCSD are proud to present their guest artist, Tara Kamangar, world renowned pianist and musician at PAAIA’s seventh signature event, Passing the Torch of Success. With a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach to Behzad Ranjbaran, Tara’s career highlights have included performances at London’s Cadogan Hall, Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art, New York City’s Skirball Auditorium, Oakland’s Paramount Theatre, and LA’s Walt Disney Hall. Praised as a “huge talent” (London’s Evening Standard) and a “world class-musician who excels at blending the best of Western and Middle-Eastern compositions” (Gulf News), Tara brings audiences rarely-heard works by Iranian composers of the past century.

Tara is an honors graduate of Harvard University, where she received her BA in Anthropology, and London’s Royal Academy of Music, where she was a recipient of the Kathleen Bayfield scholarship. This coming season, her performances will include Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto with orchestras, as well as collaborations with singer Mohsen Namjoo, and a ten-city tour of Europe and Canada with the Iranian underground band Kiosk, for which she plays gypsy-jazz violin. She is currently recording her debut album, “East of Melancholy: Piano Music from Russia to Iran” with the Grammy-award winning music engineer, Leslie Ann Jones, as well as an album of original songs inspired by French chansons and jazz, written to lyrics by her brother. A native of California, Tara has studied the piano and violin from the age of three.
