About the Book
New in 2010, this colorful picture book was created due to the lack of children’s books (and none for children ages 3-7) to help young children learn about the Iranian New Year and especially the tradition of the Sofreh Haftseen.

Young children often learn from hearing and recreating stories. “Gala and her Friends Celebrate Norooz” shares the celebration of Norooz through characters that are part of the Sofreh Haftseen. The story follows Gala Seeb (Apple) as she looks for her friend Maya Mahi (Goldfish) on the way to the Norooz party. Along her journey, Gala meets the other six items; all preparing for the Norooz celebration with their friends. At the end of the story, everyone has gathered around one another as the Sofreh Haftseen is set. All of the Haftseen items are written phonetically, so children learn the Farsi names as they read or hear the story.

“Gala and her Friends Celebrate Norooz” offers an entertaining way to introduce one of the Persian traditions to Iranian children, aged 3 to 7, born or raised in the United States.  It also provides a fun way for Iranian children to share Norooz with their non-Iranian friends.
