March 8, 2012, New York, New York – On the evening of March 6th in New York City, a diverse crowd of Iranian Americans representing different generations, professions, and political views gathered in unified support for Dr. Milad Pooran, and his bid to become the first Iranian American in the United States Congress. IAPAC, the political action committee affiliated with PAAIA, hosted the fundraiser in support of Dr. Pooran and his campaign for the congressional seat representing the 6th District of Maryland.
Guests had the opportunity to meet Dr. Pooran and hear firsthand the details of his successful career beginning with his immigrant roots, his rise as a student of the public education system to becoming a medical doctor and his thirteen years of proud dedicated service to the United States as a member of the Air National Guard. Former congressional candidate and political consultant, Darius Shahinfar, introduced Dr. Pooran and spoke of the challenges in financing a campaign as a newcomer. Shahinfar emphasized to community members, “the Campaign needs your donations to be able to effectively communicate with voters and to win the election.”
Dr. Pooran discussed the competitive landscape for the primary and general elections. He also drew parallels between the aspirations of immigrants for economic opportunities, education and affordable healthcare, with those of average, middle-class Americans, a message he believes will resonate with voters. Dr. Pooran, the archetype for the American Dream, encouraged Iranian Americans “to be politically engaged and to vote,” stressing that “being involved now, allows us to actualize our vision for the future.”
Given the dynamics of the newly drawn 6th District (more blue than red, including a high percentage of immigrant voters), and Dr. Pooran’s unique background and qualifications, he was lauded as the best candidate capable of winning the 6th District assuming sufficient resources to get his name and message out prior to the April 3rd primary.
