PAAIA Mourns the Premature Loss of Maryam Mirzakhani, Prize-Winning Mathematician
PAAIA joins the Iranian American Community in mourning the loss of the first woman and Iranian American to win the prestigious Fields Medal. We extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends and all of the students she has touched.
Professor Mirzakhani was a world-renowned Iranian American math prodigy and professor of mathematics at Stanford University. She was born in Iran and moved to the United States to complete her graduate studies at Harvard University.
In a 2014 interview, she remarked: “I like crossing the imaginary boundaries people set up between different fields….It’s about being optimistic and trying to connect things.” – Quanta Magazine
