Washington, DC – Today, the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization serving the interests of the Iranian American community, issued the following statement in support of amendments offered by Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) to the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would prevent an unauthorized war with Iran.
“PAAIA commends Sen. Udall and Reps. Khanna and Schakowsky for their efforts to uphold the constitutional responsibility of Congress and prevent an unauthorized war with Iran. While the U.S. should always defend its national interests, our country should exhaust all possible diplomatic options before we send our American sons and daughters into war. PAAIA believes that U.S. national interests are best served by prioritizing diplomacy and supporting the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people.”
A bipartisan majority in both chambers of Congress supported similar amendments in the 2020 NDAA but it failed to clear the 60-vote threshold to advance in the Senate. In March of this year, Congress passed a bipartisan War Powers Resolution that would prevent an unauthorized war with Iran, but it did not have enough votes to override a presidential veto.
