Nominate Legendary Iranian Vocalist Shajarian for NPR’s Great Voices in History

December 11, 2009, Washington, DC – Internationally acclaimed Iranian vocalist Mohammad Reza Shajarian has been called “Iran’s greatest living master of traditional Persian music”. Shajarian’s unique vocal style is immediately recognizable and he is loved by people of all ages, inside and outside of Iran. Performing for over 40 years, Shajarian is regarded as a national treasure and Iran’s most diverse and prolific singer of all time.

In January 2010, NPR will launch a year-long exploration of 50 Great Voices in recorded history, from around the world. NPR has asked people to nominate artists for the series and has received thousands of options. NPR and a panel of experts are in the process of whittling them down to about 100 singers, which include legends such as Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Mohammad Reza Shajarian. NPR has also asked people to choose five favorites from the list of nominees and explain why they should be included in the final 50.
