Iran Nuclear Deal Passes: Congress Fails to Block Joint Chief Plan of Action
September 11, 2015, Washington, DC – On September 10, 2015, the Senate failed to make cloture on House Joint Resolution 64, “Disapproving of the agreement transmitted to Congress by the President on July 19, 2015, relating to the nuclear program of Iran.” This prohibits any further Congressional action limiting the implementation of the Joint Chief Plan of Action (JCPA), known colloquially as the Iran Nuclear Deal. As of September 17, 2015, the JCPA will begin to be implemented in consideration with US law, beginning the process of lifting US economic sanctions on Iran.
The vote for cloture, brought up by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), needed an additional two votes to bring the Resolution to vote in the Senate. Republican opponents to the JCPA have sought a variety of
