Farrah Douglas Bids For City Council Of Carlsbad, CA

By PAAIA Government Affairs Office

Aug. 30, 2010, San Diego, CA – Farrah Douglas, a successful businesswoman with an exceptional record of civic involvement, is a candidate for the City Council of Carlsbad, California. Douglas is one of four candidates vying for two council seats and is considered one of the favorites in the race. U.S. Congressman Brian Bilbray, State Senator Mimi Walters, Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis, the Republican Party of San Diego, and the Lincoln Club of San Diego, are among the many community leaders, public officials, and organizations that have endorsed her campaign. The election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.

Douglas’ competitors include current councilmember Mark Packard, educator Mark Wantz, and banker William Jubb. The two council seats will go to the two top vote-getters. Recent polls show Douglas and Packard leading the race.

“I am running for public office because I love America and I am grateful for the freedoms and opportunity that we have in America,” says Douglas. “Running for city council is my way of saying thank you to citizens in Carlsbad for being there when my family needed them. It is my way of saying thank you to America for being there and giving me a new home when I needed one. That is why I am running.”

Douglas was born in Iran. She put herself through college there, earning a B.A. in English and French literature and worked as a journalist, writer, translator and interpreter. In 1979, Douglas and her American born husband escaped from Iran before the American hostage crisis and immigrated to the United States. After settling in Carlsbad, Farrah Douglas worked as a real estate agent and received a Masters in Philosophy from San Diego State University. Since 1990, Douglas and her husband have been the owners of a small printing business in Carlsbad. The first day their shop opened, the couple made only 50 cents. Since then, the business has grown exponentially to become very successful.

Farrah Douglas is making her second run for a council post in Carlsbad. She narrowly lost in the 2008 election. Although her first bid for the City Council of Carlsbad fell short, Douglas did receive tremendous amount of grassroots support, which set the stage for her 2010 campaign. “I truly enjoyed every minute of the 2008 campaign and the hospitality shown to me by the people of Carlsbad,” Douglas told PAAIA. “The most enjoyable part of my candidacy was the opportunity to meet with so many residents and to learn about their ideas and concerns about the future of our city.”

A strong believer in public service and civic engagement, Douglas has served on numerous non-profit and community boards. She is the past chair of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and has served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation, and the Carlsbad High Noon Rotary. In 2006, Douglas was appointed by the Mayor and the City Council to serve on the Carlsbad Planning Commission.
