Farid Hadj Reflects on His Ansari Fellowship Experience with City Year Los Angeles
PAAIA’s 2025 Ansari Public Service Fellow, Farid Hadj, is a recent graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned his B.A. in Political Science. This summer, Farid completed his fellowship with City Year Los Angeles, serving alongside students and teachers in South LA who are working every day to build brighter futures. Through the fellowship, he gained hands-on experience in education, mentorship, and community engagement, all while strengthening his commitment to a career in public service.
Below, Farid reflects on his experience and how the Ansari Fellowship has shaped his professional path:

“Over the past few months, I have had the privilege of working with City Year Los Angeles, where I served in South LA alongside students and teachers who are building brighter futures every day. My experience has been transformative, offering numerous hands-on opportunities to make a real difference in the community while developing skills that will guide my career in public service.
My role with City Year was deeply rewarding. I worked directly with students, providing academic support, mentoring, and helping to create a positive learning environment. Each day brought new challenges and opportunities, from tutoring students in math and English literacy to supporting teachers with lesson implementation and behavior management. I also participated in service projects that strengthened the school community and addressed resource gaps many schools in South LA face. Beyond the classroom, I had the chance to engage with families and community members, learning firsthand about the barriers students overcome daily. This experience opened my eyes to how interconnected education, economic opportunity, and community support truly are.
I’m deeply grateful to PAAIA for their support through the Ansari Public Service Fellowship. This fellowship allowed me to fully commit to my work with City Year without financial constraints that often limit opportunities for meaningful public service. I am honored to be part of this network and grateful for PAAIA’s dedication to supporting fellows like me as we pursue careers in public service.”
PAAIA congratulates Farid Hadj on his service and accomplishments this summer. His work with City Year Los Angeles exemplifies the Ansari Fellowship’s mission—to empower Iranian Americans pursuing careers in public service, advocacy, and leadership.
We thank Farid for his dedication and look forward to following his continued growth and future contributions as a valued member of our Civic Leadership Program Alumni.
