Beneath the Veil

Beneath the Veil

Sunday, April 25, 2010, 7:30PM
Alice Tully Hall
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

International award winning actress and human rights activist, Mary Apick, presents her scathing, deeply moving, Critic’s Choice play, Beneath the Veil, for an exclusive one-night-only Red Carpet performance.

This stunning eye-opener, based on real events, unveils the truth behind the brutal treatment of millions of women today in the Middle East.  Traditional music and dance, presented by a cast of twelve, accompanies and highlights the action.  With all that is going on Iran and elsewhere, this play is more important than ever.

As with all other performances of Beneath the Veil, including at The Kennedy Center in Washington, and Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, the play is presented in support of women everywhere.

“You can take away our rights, and cover us from head to toe, but you cannot take away our voices!”

Among the beneficiary organizations of the special event at Lincoln Center is Equality Now, an international organization dedicated to fighting for women’s rights around the world.  Members of its Advisory Council include celebrities such as Meryl Streep.

Past speakers and Honorary Chairs for Beneath the Veil presentations include: First Lady Laura Bush, international journalist Rudi Bakhtiar, former Representative to the United Nations General Assembly, Goli Ameri, and Timothy Higdon of Amnesty International.

Beneath the Veil was a huge success when it had its East Coast premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.  First Lady Laura Bush was the Honorary Chair, and Ambassador Jawad of Afghanistan, Queen Noor of Jordan, the Ambassador of Egypt, the Empress of Iran and many other influential people were in attendance.  It has played an encore at the Kennedy Center, played at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles in recognition of International Women’s day, and in many other world-class venues.

The Lincoln Center performance will be attended by government officials, United Nations personnel, women’s rights activists, and various celebrities.
