Amir Omar Announces Bid for Richardson Mayor

November 16, 2012, Dallas, TX – Richardson City Council member Amir Omar yesterday announced his bid for mayor of Richardson, Texas. The election is scheduled for May 2013 and will mark the first time since the city’s charter was adopted in 1956 that the residents of Richardson will elect their mayor. Previous mayors were selected by the city council.

“This is a great change for our future because we deserve a Mayor who works directly for our families and small businesses,” said Omar in his announcement notice. “Just as I have done on the City Council, as your Mayor I will be a hands-on leader with a passion for Richardson. That means waking up each day with the goal of making our community the best place possible to live, work and raise a family.”

November 16, 2012, New York, NY- (September 2012) PBS announced today the premiere of THE IRANIAN AMERICANS, new documentary by Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Goldberg. The program airs Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 9:30-10:30 p.m. ET/PT (check local listings) on select PBS stations. Filmed around the United States – from Los Angeles to Washington, DC – THE IRANIAN AMERICANS chronicles the underreported history of a group of immigrants finding refuge, overcoming adversity and ultimately creating new lives in the United States. Even though Iran is in the news virtually every day, many Americans have little knowledge of the story of the hundreds of thousands of Iranians who live in the U.S. The special is presented by the network’s flagship station in Greater Los Angeles and Southern California, PBS SoCaL.

As THE IRANIAN AMERICANS shows, the Iranians’ story begins more than two millennia ago in the Middle East, in a land that came to be called Persia. They built an empire that stretched from North Africa to India, from the Caspian to the Red Sea. A people of diverse ethnicities and faiths, they developed rich traditions that endured centuries of migrations and conquests. In the second half of the 20th century, their nation, now known as Iran, was racked by political and religious upheaval, leading ultimately to revolution. In 1979, the revolution thrust Ayatollah Khomeini into power, beginning an era when dissent was not tolerated. Tens of thousands of Iranians left their homeland for the United States, a country they would come to call home.

The Bita Daryabari Graduate Fellowship in the School of Law 2013-2014 Academic Year

November 16, 2012, San Francisco, CA- The Bita Daryabari Graduate Fellowship Program allows a woman lawyer residing in a Middle Eastern country* to spend an academic year (approximately nine to ten months beginning in early August) in San Francisco, California (USA) at Golden Gate University, pursuing an LLM degree in the School of Law. The lawyer selected as a fellow under this program will enroll full-time and may choose among the Law School’s LLM programs in Environmental Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Legal Studies, and United States Legal Studies.

The successful candidate will have five to ten years of experience practicing law, and will be engaged in significant work that advances the public interest generally and the interests of women in particular.  Preference will be given to a female lawyer from Iran.

The recipient will have the opportunity to broaden and deepen her knowledge in the substantive legal areas of her choice, enhancing her career as well as her ability to serve others. She will also have opportunities to engage with members of the law school and local legal communities at specially organized events and activities. The program will provide professional networking opportunities and personal connections to distinguished lawyers in the San Francisco area.
