In 2004, Iranian-born entrepreneur Shabnam Rezaei started Persian Mirror, an online magazine to “teach the world about Persian culture.”
The Web site, which Rezaei says was started as a “hobby” and now boasts five million hits a month, caught the eye of producer Dunstin Ellis. He contacted Rezaei and captivated her with a cartoon about a young Persian boy named Babak who is living in the U.S.
“He is an 8-year-old boy who feels stuck between the two cultures. So at home he is getting Iranian culture, and at school he is getting American culture. But at the core of it, he is feeling really left out.”
