Celebrating Pride: PAAIA Stands with the LGBTQ Community
Washington, DC — As Pride Month unfolds, the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) reaffirms our unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community. This month is a time to celebrate love, diversity, and the progress made towards equality. It is also a reminder of the work that remains to be done to ensure that every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is treated with dignity and respect.
Pride Month holds special significance for PAAIA as we reflect on the rich diversity within our own organization. We are proud to have team members who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Their presence enriches our work and strengthens our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
The Iranian American community is vibrant and diverse, embodying a rich cultural heritage that spans centuries. While some may perceive our culture as incompatible with LGBTQ+ identities, we know that Iranian Americans carry a wide spectrum of beliefs, values, and experiences. Having fled an oppressive regime that limited our rights, our community deeply understands that freedom, equality, acceptance, and love are fundamental to our shared humanity.
“The LGBTQ community is by nature an intersectional community. We come from all different walks of life, races, creeds, sociopolitical, and cultural backgrounds,” explained Alex Mohajer, an Iranian American running to become the first openly gay City Councilmember in Irvine, CA. “If you care about the liberation of marginalized and oppressed groups, if you care about the liberation of the Iranian people, you must also care about the liberation of women and LGBTQ people and other marginalized communities right here at home.”
PAAIA’s dedication to LGBTQ+ rights goes beyond the month of June. At PAAIA, we believe in standing up for equality and justice every day. We recognize that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is interconnected with the broader struggle for human rights and dignity for all. By embracing and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community, we move closer to a world where love and acceptance prevail.
