PAAIA Applauds Implementation of Nuclear Agreement Between World Powers and Iran
January 16, 2016, Washington, DC – The Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) welcomes todays announcement of the implementation of the historic nuclear agreement between the P5+1 coalition (U.S., U.K., France, Russia, China, and Germany) and Iran.
Today the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified that Iran has met its initial obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The agreement reached by Iran and the P5+1 nations in July of last year calls on Iran to implement certain measures that will set back its ability to produce enough material for nuclear weapons. In exchange for these setbacks, international sanctions directed at Iran’s nuclear program will begin to be lifted.
“As an organization that represents the Iranian American community, PAAIA supports efforts to pursue a peaceful resolution to the decade-long stalemate over Iran’s nuclear program,” said Dr. Leila Austin, the Executive Director of the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans. “We welcome today’s announcement of the implementation of the JCPOA and are hopeful that it will establish a solid foundation for continued dialogue.”
The results of PAAIA’s 2015 Public Opinion Survey show that Iranian Americans are supportive of a nuclear agreement with Iran. Nearly two-thirds of Iranian Americans (64%) approved of the P5+1 framework agreement with Iran designed to place limits on Iran’s nuclear program, with eight in ten saying that President Obama has been effective in handling negotiations with Iran.
In order to reach Implementation Day, Iran has greatly reduced its stockpile of enriched uranium, relinquished a majority of its uranium enrichment capacity, and granted the IAEA access to important nuclear facilities. Unprecedented IAEA access has allowed for consistent verification and monitoring of Iran’s completion of the requirements agreed to in the JCPOA.
We recognize this is an important step in a continuing process of fulfilling the deal and are hopeful that it will offer Iran opportunity for economic growth, increased integration into the world community, and creation of a more open and free society.
