PAAIA Welcomes Tentative Nuclear Agreement between P5+1 and Iran

April 2, 2015, Washington, D.C. – The Obama Administration announced today that the P5+1 coalition (U.S., U.K., France, Russia, China, and Germany) and Iran have agreed on the parameters of an agreement that would limit Iran’s nuclear program. The announcement comes two days after the self-imposed March 31st deadline set by international negotiators last November following the second extension of the interim agreement. The P5+1 and Iran will now have until June 30th to work out the details of a comprehensive final deal.

“As an organization that represents the Iranian American community, PAAIA supports efforts to pursue a peaceful resolution to the decade-long stalemate over Iran’s nuclear program,” said Dr. Leila Austin, the Executive Director of the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA). “We welcome today’s announcement and hope that it will lead to a final comprehensive settlement, averting another war in the Middle East and establishing a solid foundation for continued dialogue.”

A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that by a nearly 2 to 1 margin, Americans also support an agreement with Iran that confines its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. In addition, PAAIA’s 2014 National Public Opinion Survey of Iranian Americans indicates that an overwhelming number of Iranian Americans would like to see a diplomatic resolution to the nuclear dispute with Iran.

Iranian Americans have strong ties to the people of Iran. They want to see an Iran that is pluralistic and democratic. A successfully negotiated settlement will increase Iran’s engagement with the international community. This, in turn, will help the international community’s efforts to engage with the Iranian people, opening possibilities for greater people-to people ties with Iran through cultural and educational exchanges. Such exchanges will invariably uphold positive features of American society and help cultivate the goodwill of the Iranian people towards the United States.

PAAIA extends its deepest appreciation to the U.S. negotiators and other members of the P5+1 delegation for their tireless efforts and for pursuing success throughout these important negotiations. We recognize this is an important step towards a longer process, which would not have been possible without the goodwill of all sides.
