Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans Statement on the Passing of Congressman Gerald E. Connolly
Washington, D.C. – With profound sadness, we mourn the passing of Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, a dedicated public servant and a steadfast ally of the Iranian American community.
His decades of service in Congress — including his leadership as the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform — were marked by his unwavering commitment to justice and civil rights. As a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Connolly played a crucial role in shaping U.S. foreign policy and advocating for democratic values worldwide.

Congressman Connolly was a true champion of Iranian Americans, standing firmly against discrimination and advocating for the protection of civil liberties. His leadership in introducing a bipartisan resolution condemning discriminatory treatment of Iranian Americans demonstrated his deep commitment to ensuring that all Americans, regardless of their heritage, are treated with dignity and respect.
Beyond his advocacy for civil rights, Congressman Connolly was a vocal proponent of internet freedom in Iran. He led bipartisan efforts urging the U.S. administration to address internet disruptions and ensure that the Iranian people have access to the tools necessary to circumvent censorship and surveillance. Following these efforts, he was an original co-sponsor of the Internet Reach and Access Now (IRAN) Act, reinforcing his commitment to ensuring open access to digital platforms for the Iranian people. His dedication to supporting the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people will not be forgotten.
Additionally, Congressman Connolly was a cosponsor of the Temporary Family Visitation Act (TFVA), which seeks to establish a new visa category allowing family members of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to visit their loved ones for important life events. His support of this legislation reflected his deep understanding of the importance of family connections and his advocacy for policies that strengthen the Iranian American community.
We extend our deepest condolences to Congressman Connolly’s family, friends, staff and colleagues. His legacy of service and his unwavering support for justice and human rights will continue to inspire us all.
May he rest in peace.
