PAAIA Applauds the Introduction of Iranian American Heritage Month and Nowruz Resolutions
Washington, D.C. – This Monday, Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-18th) and Yassamin Ansari (AZ-3rd) introduced two significant resolutions in Congress: one recognizing Nowruz, the Persian New Year, and another designating March as Iranian American Heritage Month.
PAAIA has long been a leading advocate for the recognition of Iranian American contributions and cultural heritage in the U.S. Congress. The introduction of these resolutions represents an important step in acknowledging the deep-rooted impact of Iranian Americans on society, democracy, and human rights.
Recognizing Nowruz and Its Cultural Significance
Nowruz, which means “new day” in Persian, marks the beginning of spring and has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. This year, Nowruz falls on March 20, 2025, and will be observed by nearly 300 million people worldwide, including over one million Iranian Americans across the U.S.
The Bipartisan Nowruz resolution acknowledges the rich cultural traditions of Iranian Americans and their contributions to fields such as science, medicine, business, and public service. Additionally, the resolution reaffirms support for the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom and human rights, particularly in light of the Women, Life, Freedom movement that continues to challenge repression in Iran.
The resolution also recognizes the importance of internet freedom in Iran, ensuring that the Iranian people can access uncensored information and freely express themselves.
Establishing Iranian American Heritage Month
The Iranian American Heritage Month resolution seeks to designate March as a month to honor Iranian Americans and their lasting impact on the US. The United States is home to the largest Iranian diaspora in the world, many of whom have enriched the nation’s economic, cultural, and political landscape.
- This resolution acknowledges:
Iranian Americans’ contributions to science, medicine, and technology, including over 4,000 patents filed by Iranian-American inventors.
- The strong entrepreneurial spirit of the community, with over 33,000 businesses generating $2.56 billion in net income.
- Iranian Americans’ service in government, law enforcement, and the military, upholding democratic values.
- The community’s religious and cultural diversity includes Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian, Baha’i, and secular traditions.
This recognition is long overdue and ensures that Iranian American history, achievements, and cultural identity are honored at a national level.
