Amir Omar Re-Elected to Richardson City Council

By PAAIA Staff

May 16, 2011, Dallas, TX – Council Member Amir Omar claimed victory in last Saturday’s election to serve a second term on the City Council of Richardson, Texas.   First elected to the City Council Place 7 in 2009, Omar is the only American of Iranian descent to serve in public office in the Dallas/Forth Worth area.

Located just ten miles outside downtown Dallas, the City of Richardson is part of the telecom corridor of Texas. The City was ranked as the 18th best place to live in the United States in the August 2008 issue of Money magazine.

A first generation American of Iranian and Palestinian descent, Omar describes himself as the, “living proof that the American dream is alive and well.” He grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas and attended Texas A&M University where he majored in Industrial Distribution.

Omar held off two challengers, psychotherapist Diana Clawson and business executive Alan North, with over 63% of the vote.  In accordance with the Texas Election Code, the results of the election are unofficial until canvassed by the City Council during a special meeting on Monday, May 23, 2011.

Members of the City Council are elected for two-year terms on a nonpartisan basis. The Council is composed of seven members: one resident from each of the City’s four quadrants and three others at-large members. All seven members are elected by the entire City. Once elected, the council members select the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem from amongst the elected members.

PAAIA congratulates Amir Omar on his re-election to the Richardson City Council.
