Iranian American Student Momeni Released on Bail in Tehran

November 13, 2008, Washington, D.C. – Esha Momeni, an Iranian American graduate student at California State University, Northridge, was released on bail after almost four weeks of detention. PAAIA welcomes the release of Momeni and calls on the Iranian authorities to bring her case to an expeditious resolution.

According to news reports, Momeni was released on Monday after her family had posted the deed to their home in Iran as bail. It remains unclear if Momeni would be allowed to leave the country. While the Iranian judiciary has not commented on her release, reports from Tehran indicate that she may be charged with propaganda against the state.

Momeni, 28, was born in Los Angeles and holds U.S. citizenship. She was on an extended trip to Iran to visit her family and to work on her Master’s thesis on women’s issues in Iran. Momeni was arrested on October 15th over an alleged traffic violation and was held in Tehran’s Evin prison.
